If you want to use the latest version of Git (which might be more recent than the one in Xcode), you have the option of installing a packaged version or going through something like Homebrew/Macports. In the Terminal, copy and paste this command-line to install Git. In the Terminal window, type the following and press Return: git -version Mac OS X comes with a pre-installed version of Git, as you noticed.
